I guess a lot of these will suit meetings too, but here are some things we’ve tried at camp (mostly inside).
Independent Crafts
We usually introduce an independent craft at the beginning – something that, once taught, the girls can pick up and work on when there’s time.
- Corking or Spool Knitting. Video.
Hint… get tapestry wool. It is already in small sections – much nicer than having to make small balls of yarn. I get them in big bags at second hand stores.
The girls love it. It isn’t expensive (after initial investment of corkers). - New Idea (actually an old one but I didn’t think of it before) Finger Knitting. The only problem with this is that you can’t really put your tools down… Put a pencil in the loops maybe? OR you can get (or make?) a Lucet / Fork Knitter like these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzFNb_8noec
- Plastic Canvas Cutlery Holder from http://www.scoutmom.net/agelevel/brownie/tryits/earthisourhome.htm
Hint… use gimp plastic string instead of yarn and sewing needles for younger kids. Really cool craft.
Together crafts
- Perler Beads – let the girls use the iron to finish off the craft (counts towards one one of the keys that say to use an appliance). It takes quite a while. It takes patience. It can be a quiet activity. Cons: lots of little pieces. If it falls apart, it is a pain to put back together. Also requires lots of supplies you probably don’t already have that don’t all get used up that may end up stored for next time (Brownie Mountain).
- Pony Beads
Once the girls pick it up, they’re good to go. I bet they’d be good to make their own designs too. - No Sew Tote Bag (thanks Shawnna!)
- Earth Day Crafts
This list isn’t done… I’ll keep adding to it as I find time. Do you have ideas? How big is your Brownie Mountain (aka, the pile of supplies in your closet, living room, office, etc)?
Love the phrase Brownie Mountain. Mine involves the study, the garage, the dining room and my fellow Guider’s garage too.
I don’t know what people do with corking, but I have instructions for making corkers out of toilet paper tubes and finishing nails if you want it.
Brownie Mountain – more like Spark, Brownie and Guide Mountain Range, with each mountain having having multiple peaks.
