We are Thankful

There is lots to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving Weekend … bulging Guide, Brownie and Spark units; a Brownie unit full of heathly girls with involved parents; a fantastic Guiding Team – Christine, Chan, Carolyn, Carolyn, Jessica, and Jen;  and you, my readers and Guiding friends.  What more can an Owl ask for?  For these, and for so many other blessings, I offer my favourite Guiding grace/thank you:

Shawn’s Grace (from Susan Wichers’ site)
words: Shawn Bird ©2000 for free use within Guiding.
Tune: Fire’s Burning
We are thankful, we are thankful (*round starts here)
For friendships, for friendships
And for good food, and for good food.
And hands that prepared it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sitting down to dinner together is part of the ritual of camp and grace is a great way to make sure girls pause to say thank you (and, logistically, it makes everyone wait to eat together).  But we need to be mindful that not everyone says grace.

In our unit, we have taken a non-denominational approach to Grace (or Thank You) at Brownie Camp.  We usually pick a sung G/TY to teach at the beginning of the first meal of camp (usually breakfast) and then repeat it at each meal.  By the end, the song is perfected and we can finish camp with a flourish.

We have three favourites:

Shawn’s Grace (from Susan Wichers’ site).
words: Shawn Bird ©2000 for free use within Guiding.
Tune: Fire’s Burning
We’re thankful, we’re thankful (*round starts here)
For friendships, for friendships
And for good food, and for good food.
And hands that prepared it.

Grace  [adapted] (from Susan Wichers’ Site)
Tune: Are You Sleeping
We are thankful, we are thankful (*round starts here)
For our food, for our food.
And our many blessings, And our many blessings
Thank – you, Thank – you. (or Thank You Lord, Thank You Lord)

Bless Our Food (also from Susan Wichers’ Site)
Tune: Make New Friends
Bless our food (*round starts here) we share with friends today.
Grant us peace and love along the way.

Scouting has a badge called “Religion in Life” (Go to Scouts Canada Volunteer Support ToolkitRIL is in the third line). Guiding, it seems, has ended its affiliation with the program (update – May 2015). If you have girls who are doing the program you can get crests at the Scout shop.

It is a badge that grows with the child and is tailored to each girl’s faith or religion. There is a large list with program associated to each.  And if yours isn’t listed, it looks like you can have the program adjusted to suit you.

The Religion in Life program is in four progressive stages, colour coded and adapted to the age groups concerned.
Stage 1 — Yellow Border (about 7–8–9)
Stage 2 — Green Border (about 10–11–12)
Stage 3 — Blue Border (about 13–14–15)
Stage 4 — Red Border (15+)

To note, the Stage 1 program for Roman Catholic children (my experience) can mostly be accomplished through the child’s First Communion preparation.

I like that there is still a way to honour faiths and religions in Guiding.  We refer to “my beliefs” in the promise – and I like that too.  Each girl and Guider can define beliefs on their own without infringing on the other person’s definition.
